GRI Vice-Chancellor visits tsunami-affected areas

NAGERCOIL, JAN. 1. The Vice-Chancellor of Gandhigram Rural University, T. Karunakaran, visited various tsunami-affected villages to study the impact of tidal waves on structures, particularly houses. The Director, Centre for Social Reconstruction, Ramkumar, and the Director, Master Trust, Tho.Nainar, accompanied him.

Later speaking to The Hindu , he said the Gandhigram Rural University would convene a consultative meeting of experts on January 5 on disaster-resistance structures, along with builder groups and non-governmental organisations in order to arrive at possible designs that could be used in the coastal areas of the State. Tsunami or cyclone resistance structures could be evolved in due course. Several teams from the university were despatched in this regard to the worst affected areas, he said.

G. Palanithurai, Head, Political Science department, and E. Vellaisamy, visited the worst affected areas in Nagapattinam and Cuddalore respectively, he said.

Meanwhile, the district administration has opened a control room at the Collectorate in order to give information on the names of the affected, relief measures being undertaken by the Government and details of damage caused by tsunami, said the Collector, Ramesh Chand Meena.

Speaking to presspersons, he said the control room would function round the clock. The phone numbers are: 278019, 279555 and 260666.

The Collector has also ordered for the extension of leave up to January 17, for all schools in Kanyakumari district, as some had been converted as relief camps.
