TIRUCHI, JAN. 1 . Those in the field of library science should get well versed in the field of information technology to remain competent in today's globalised scenario, G. Viswanathan, Chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, said on Wednesday. Colleges and universities offering bachelor and masters degrees in library and information science should impart training in IT making the students more competent, he said while inaugurating the fourth national conference on "Issues of policy making in library and information centres in IT era" at Bishop Heber College here. Though the country could not participate in the industrial revolution, it was a forerunner in the field of information technology. With the thrust being on competence in the current globalised scenario, it is essential for our youngsters to be on par with those in the Western world. Institutions offering distance education programmes could have web-based interactive technology to have constant touch the students. Stating that libraries were essential to educate the public, he said the Centre and State governments should allocate adequate funds to improve the existing public libraries. Rt. Rev. Dr. D.
