CHENNAI, JAN. 1. December 2004 saw two-wheeler maker Hero Hondo selling a total of 2.31 lakh motorcycles. It sold 1.60 lakh motorcycles during the same period in the previous year, an increase of 44 per cent. A release said the company was now running to full capacity for the third consecutive month. Cumulative sales for the third quarter of 2004-05 registered an increase of 24 per cent with sales of 7.12 lakh motorcycles. In all, it sold 25.28 lakh units in calendar 2004 against 18.73 lakh units in 2003.
Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto reported a 58.4 per cent rise in its total vehicle sales at 1.68 lakh units in December against 1.06 lakh units in the same month in the previous fiscal. Motorcycle sales during the reporting month shot up to 1.43 lakh units from 71,623 units in December 2003, the company said in a release. Total two-wheeler sales in the month under review grew 81.1 per cent at 1.54 lakh vehicles against 85,086 vehicle. However, three-wheeler sales declined by 31.6 per cent to 14,705 units from 21,483 units. Motorcycle sales during April-December grew 38.5 per cent at 10.53 lakh units against 7.60 lakh units in the same period of the earlier fiscal. Three-wheeler sales during the nine months declined by 0.2 per cent to 1.68 lakh units.
TVS Motor
Nearer home, Venu Srinivasan-led TVS Motor Company said that it had sold 63,496 motorcycles in December 2004 as compared to 52,464 units in the same period in the earlier year, recording a growth of 21 per cent. Total two-wheeler sales stood at 96,886 units against 84,306 units, a growth of 15 per cent. TVS Scooty continued to dominate the scooterette segment (sub-100cc category). The company sold 14,866 units in December against 13,671 unit. The company sold 18,524 units of TVS Moped in the month under review as compared to 18,171 units.
