Venugopala, Gnaneswara sparkle

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 1. In reply to Gujarat's huge first innings total of 420 Andhra's Y. Venugopala Rao, and Gnaneswara Rao have so far added 120 runs for the third wicket, on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A' match at the Ukku Stadium here.

Nilesh Modi's 72 not out helped by staying at the crease for more than three hours to help Gujarat post a huge total.

He lost his overnight partner, Bhavik Thaker in the third ball of the day when D. Kalyan Krishna started the day with the second new ball. L.N. Prasad Reddy held Thaker behind the wickets without any addition to the overnight score of 259 for four.

But Salil Yadav (20, 4x3) provided good support to his captain and added 43 runs for the sixth wicket in 17 overs before he was bowled by A.G. Praveen, to become the young medium pacer's first Ranji victim. This was Praveen's third Ranji match.

Right-arm leg spinner Balaji Kishan Singh struck twice with A.G. Pradeep in the slips snapping up Siddharth Trivedi and Hitesh Mazumdar and when Gujarat's innings appeared to be coming to an, the No. 10 batsmen Lalit Patel (39, 6x2, 4x2, 42b, 54m) launched an assault on the home team and the ninth wicket stand yielded a valuable 73 runs off 95 balls.
