Volleyball
KOCHI, JAN. 1. Thiruvananthapuram shook off some early resistance from Kozhikode to win 25-14, 25-17, 25-11 and entered the women's final of the Kerala State senior volleyball championship at the Pappan stadium, Varapuzha, on Saturday night. Thiruvananthapuram, with Ashwini Kumar back in the side after the varsities engagements and with coach Sunny Joseph coming in today to guide the team, put on a much improved performance than the opening day's play. The young Kozhikode girls played a vibrant game early. Sujatha occasionally impressed while blocking Thiruvananthapuram's main attackers Sheeba, Ashwini and Gisha Thomas, but as the match progressed the Kozhikode girls realised that the team from the capital carried too many guns for them. Sheeba, Ashwini and Gisha impressed in the match and towards the end, the seasoned setter Mercy Antony stole the show with a surprise block and a drop. Ernakulam entered the men's final late on Friday with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-19 victory over Kollam.
Women's quarterfinals:
Kollam bt Pathanamthitta 11-25, 26-28, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12.
Thiruvananthapuram bt Ernakulam 25-17, 25-20, 25-19.
Thrissur bt Kannur 25-16, 17-25, 25-19, 27-25.
