HYDERABAD, JAN. 1. The formalities of the assumption of office by the new Director General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, which could not be completed on Friday as he had to rush to Vijayawada, were gone through on Saturday. He was conducted to the chair by his predecessor, S.R. Sukumara, who celebrated his birthday today. Several senior police officers greeted Mr. Sen. Later, speaking to reporters, Mr. Sen said his priorities were basic policing and making the force people-friendly. Mr. Sen and Mr. Sukumara also addressed a meeting organised by the Ministerial Staff Association of the DGP's office. Mr. Sen said he had been selected for the post "without lobbying or organised support." He was emphatic that if the call of duty necessitated, every policeman must be prepared to make sacrifice. Mr. Sukumara regretted inadequacies in the ministerial staff of the DGP's office as most of them were appointed on compassionate grounds following the death of their kin who were policemen.
Stress on training
He stressed the need for their training at the MCR Institute of Human Resource Development or any other training centre. Mr. Sukumara said the Government did not permit regular employment of ministerial staff of the police and called for implementation of recommendations made by the Anand Ram Committee in this respect. Mr. Sukumara was given farewell by being driven in a flower bedecked open-top jeep from the portico to the gates of the complex with senior police officers pulling the vehicle with ropes.
