Three IAS officers promoted

HYDERABAD: The Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, on Saturday issued orders promoting three IAS officers to the fixed grade of Rs. 26,000. The officers of the 1972 batch are D. Subba Rao, V.P. Jauhari and Comal Ramachadran Gayatri.

While Mr. Rao and Ms. Ramachandran have been retained in their posts of chairman, Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation and Executive Vice-Chairperson, Dr. MCR HRD Institute, Mr. Jauhari has been re-designated as Special Chief Secretary, Revenue Department. Meanwhile, V. Durga Das, Adilabad Joint Collector, has been posted as Vice-Chairman of the Vijayawada, Guntur Tenali Municipal Urban Development Authority in place of V.N. Vishnu. The posting orders of Mr. Vishnu will be issued separately.

BC convention today

HYDERABAD: A State-level convention of backward classes being organised here on Sunday will discuss the problems of artisans to be brought to the notice of the Government.

According to P. Ramakrishnaiah, convener, the living conditions of artisans were deteriorating forcing many of them to resort to suicide. The demands of artisans include reservations in legislatures, representation in non-governmental organisations and setting up of institutions to benefit them.

Programme on welfare

HYDERABAD: The Government is launching a programme to inform people about the welfare measures being taken by it. `Samachara Sravanthi' will be launched on January 3 by the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, according to Ali Mohd. Shabbir, Minister for Information and Public Relations.

The programme will be taken up thrice a week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in the conference hall, `J' Block, Secretariat. Its schedule for this month is: finance (January 3), agriculture (January 6), rural development and rural water supply (January 8), youth services (January 10) school education (January 12), social welfare (January 17), municipal administration and urban development (January 19), revenue (January 22), major industries (January 29) and panchayat raj (January 31).

Bharat Ratna for PV sought

HYDERABAD: The Prakasam Institute of Development Studies has resolved to persuade the Centre to bestow the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, on the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, for his services to the country.

V. Vijayasikhamani, president, and S.S. Murthy, general secretary, in a statement, recalled that Rao, who laid the foundation stone for the institute, was instrumental in the launch of economic and land reforms as Chief Minister of the State.

Job exchanges' distinction

HYDERABAD: The State Government has sponsored 52,506 unemployed youth against vacancies notified by various employers through its 44 employment exchanges during 2004. This was the highest-ever number of candidates sponsored by the exchanges for jobs in the last 41 years. It was only during 1976-78 that the sponsorship mark touched 50,000 but never exceeded 52,000, the Labour and Employment Minister, G. Vinod, told reporters here on Saturday.

While 1,790 candidates found placements through routine employment exchange sponsorship, the remaining 50,716 were selected due to new initiatives taken up by the Government for unemployed youth.

Rythu Sangham threatens stir

BHIMAVARAM: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham state committee has threatened to launch a massive protest if the Government withdrew its promise of free power to agriculture. Addressing a meeting of the committee activists here, its State president, B. Tulasidas, asked the Government to stick to the election promise.

Somasekhara panel website

HYDERABAD: The website of the S.B. Somasekhara Commission of Inquiry -- http://bksj-coi.kar.nic.in -- was activated on Saturday. It can now be accessed for obtaining details of the commission (tel. 55522292 and fax.23379655), according to a press release.

Karnataka's gesture

HYDERABAD: Karnataka has contributed Rs. 1 crore towards relief and rehabilitation of tsunami victims in the State.

Its Major Irrigation Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, presented a cheque for the amount to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the Lake View guesthouse on Saturday. The gesture of the Karnataka Government to the State is in addition to the Rs. 20-crore aid it has announced for the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

YSR greets Governor

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, called on the Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, at Raj Bhavan on Saturday to greet him on the occasion of the New Year.

Mr. Shinde presented to Dr. Reddy a cheque for Rs. 28,530 contributed by Raj Bhavan staff for the relief and rehabilitation of tsunami victims. Dr. Reddy also called on the Chief Justice of India, R.C. Lahoti, and the High Court Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, at Raj Bhavan to greet them on the New Year.

The Chief Minister did not accept bouquets from visitors who called on him at the Secretariat to offer their greetings. A group of priests belonging to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam chanted slokas and blessed him.

Relief material despatched

HYDERABAD: Relief material in five vans for the tsunami-hit people in the coastal areas of the State and Tamil Nadu, collected by the Praja Party, was despatched from its office here on Saturday.

E. Giri Yadav, president, flagged off the vehicles carrying clothes, eatables and medicines.

Row over bus stop

WARANGAL: Mild tension prevailed at Nayanpak village of Chityal mandal as the police objected to the construction of a bus stop by the family members of deceased naxalites.

According to information, the `Bandhu Mitrula Committee' which constructed memorials in various parts of the district took up the construction of the bus stop.

They were about to inaugurate the same on Saturday. However, the police reached the spot and objected to it stating that they did not obtain permission from any agency.

Protesting against the act of the police, they entered into argument and staged a sit-in at the spot.

Meet on statistics

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University will be hosting an international conference on `Recent developments in Statistics and their applications' on January 3 and 4. A galaxy of renowned statisticians from USA and Canada are expected to take part in the meet and discuss the latest trends in the field. According to the organising secretary, K.V.S.Sarma, 140 research papers focussing on providing a unified approach to theory, practice and training in statistics would be presented at the meet.

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University awarded a Ph.D to Sireesha Gundlapalli for her research work, `The role of Karna in Sanskrit literature: A critical study'.

YSR to visit

Kondapuram

CUDDAPAH: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will visit Kondapuram in Jammalamadugu constituency on Sunday. He will attend the marriage of the daughter of former MLA, C. M. Ramanatha Reddy. He will reach Kondapuram at 9.30 a.m. from Hindupur and later leave by helicopter for Hyderabad.

CUDDAPAH: The 45-day All-India Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition began at Cuddapah Municipal High School grounds on Friday. The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, inaugurated the 10th annual exhibition.

The Exhibition Society founder-president, K. Sivananda Reddy, thanked the Collector for allotting site for the society office. The Rajya Sabha member, S. Ramamuni Reddy, and the SP, V.C. Sajjanar, also spoke.

CUDDAPAH: A student of Pushpagiri Residential Public School here, M. Prema Sruthi, bagged the most promising student delegate award at a national seminar on `India, my country, my concern'.

She was also presented a personal computer costing Rs. 30,000, at the seminar at Chennai last week. The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, and DEO, Balaiah, complimented the student.

Nod for hospital

Nellore: Official sanction has been accorded to set up a 30-bed hospital at Naidupet town. The hospital will have an X-ray plant, a radiologist and the required medical and paramedical staff. The facility will help people from the nearby seven mandals.

CHITTOOR: Madusudhan Reddy, Director, Nutrine Confectionaries Limited, inaugurated a park on Saturday constructed by the company at the foothills of Chittoor.

tax collected

MADANAPALLE: The Madanapalle Municipal Commissioner, Nagabhushanam, said that the municipality had collected Rs. 2.85 crores tax by the December 31, 2004. With Friday being the last day for remittance, heavy rush was seen at the municipal office and eSeva centres.

Ayyappa pooja

CHITTOOR: The district Collector, S. S. Rawat, and the SP, V. V. Gopalakrishna, participated in the Ayyappaswamy Pooja held at the TTD Kalyanamandapam, Chittoor, on Saturday. The puja was organised by Shabareesh Association. Its secretary, Raveendra Babu, said poojas would be held for two days and the Ayyappaswamy idol would be taken around the main streets of Chittoor.

Meet on VAT

NALGONDA: The Commercial Taxes Department is organising a seminar on Value Added Tax (VAT) at Town Hall in the district headquarters on January 4. The Deputy Commissioner, K. Ravindra, in a press release on Saturday, called upon traders to utilize the opportunity to air their views on the proposed amendment. The Joint Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, Hyderabad, would address the seminar and interact with traders.

Degree awarded

KARIMNAGAR: Chaduvu Srinivas Reddy, of Bejigiri Sherief village in Jammikunta mandal, has been awarded Ph D. A research scholar in Chemistry from the Kakatiya University, Mr. Reddy presented a thesis on `Efficient synthesis of some 1,8-napthyridnes under microwave irradiation," according to an official release here today.

KARIMNAGAR: The Chalimeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences (CAIMS), Karimnagar, celebrated freshers day on the college premises on Friday night. The Karimnagar range DIG, A.R Anuradha, participated as chief guest. The CAIMS principal, S.V Ranga Reddy, the IMA State vice-president, Dr. V. Bhoom Reddy, the director, C. Warangal: The supplementary examinations of BA/B.Com courses of School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE), Kakatiya University, would be held from January 17 to 24. The SDLCE director, Prof. N. Lingamurthy, requested the students to collect their hall tickets one day before the commencement of examinations which would be held at select centres under the university jurisdiction in Warangal, Khammam, Adilabad and Karimnagar.

Panel on suicides

to hold hearing

NIZAMABAD: The single member Commission of Enquiry headed by L. Ramachandra Reddy on the incidents of farmers' suicide in the State will arrive here on January 6 as part of its three day enquiry in the district. The Commission will enquire into the suicidal deaths of the farmers occurred from July 1, 1998 to August 23, 2004. It will examine the witnesses, members of the bereaved families and police and revenue officers.

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Joint Collector, V. Durga Das, has been transferred on Saturday According to a Government Order, he was posted as Vice-Chairman of Vijayawada Urban Development Corporation (VUDA) which encompasses Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenali Municipal Corporation and Councils.
