PONDICHERRY JAN. 1. Doctors of different departments in the Centrally-administered JIPMER have fanned out to tsunami-affected villages in Pondicherry, Karaikal and Nagapattinam areas to ensure that there was no epidemic threat. K.S. Reddy, Dean, told The Hindu today that more than 24 doctors in addition to the team from the Directorate-General of Health Services, New Delhi, swung into action as soon as the catastrophe occurred. Senior and junior doctors formed part of the medical team assisted by nursing staff to render health care in the relief camps. The teams were carrying drugs and medicines worth Rs. 2 lakhs. Nine tons of bleaching power had been sprayed in the areas as a preventive measure. The teams were using as many as 10,000 tetanus disposable syringes.
