Hockey
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, JAN. 1. Former Indian coach and Olympic captain, V. Baskaran, said that India had lost one of the tactical and technical coaches in the death of Balkishen Singh. Recalling his association with the coach since his University days Balkishen Singh coached the Combined Universities' team in 1969 Baskaran noted that Balkishen was the author of total hockey although not many would credit him with that as the pioneer. "It was Balkishen who converted me into a left half, a position that earned me international recognition, after I began my career as a centre-half," Baskaran said. UNI reports from Chandigarh: Former Indian hockey captain and coach, Pargat Singh, described Balkishen Singh as a person who was the link between old and new hockey. ``Balkishen was an all-round hockey coach, and he understood old and new hockey,'' said Pargat Singh, adding that the legend's demise was a big loss to the hockey world. Olympian Tarsem said, ``an era had ended with the death of Balkrishan. It is a great loss to hockey."
