`Central allotment insufficient'

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 1. The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, has said that the State Government should implement the rehabilitation projects for the tsunami-affected in a time-bound manner instead of making announcements.

Inaugurating the CPI(M) Alappuzha district conference at Vayalar today, Mr. Achuthanandan said that the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, had failed to convince the Central Government of the extent of damages suffered by the State in the tsunami. The aid of Rs. 100 crores allotted by the Centre was not sufficient, he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that the aid announced by the Centre would not be sufficient for even the reconstruction of houses destroyed by the tsunami.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that the resignation letter of Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, which had been submitted to the IUML State president, Panakkad Syed Muhammedali Shihab Thangal, was a result of the strong agitation organised by the Opposition parties.

The CPI(M) district secretary, M.A. Baby, presented the report. The LDF convener, Paloli Muhammed Kutty, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and T.M. Thomas Issac, MLAs, and P.K. Sreemathi were present. The conference will conclude on January 3.
