CHENNAI, JAN.1. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, said today the State Government would take steps to issue fresh ration cards to the families in the tsunami-hit areas. In a statement here, she said that people belonging to the coastal districts were unable to get essential articles under the public distribution system (PDS) as they had lost their ration cards due to the calamity. Instructions had been given to officials to take necessary steps to issue new ration cards, she added. "As it may take time to provide new ration cards with photographs of the beneficiaries, I have directed issuance of alternate cards to facilitate the affected families to draw essential articles from the fair price shops. Fresh cards bearing the photographs of the beneficiaries will be issued to them later", she said. Instructions were also given to supply an additional quantity of 10 litres of kerosene to the beneficiaries in the tsunami-hit areas when they received essential articles from the PDS outlets. The move would benefit about one lakh families, she said.
Books, certificates
In a separate statement, the Chief Minister said that students in the coastal districts had lost their textbooks and notebooks in the floods caused by tsunami. Instructions were given to distribute textbooks and notebooks to needy students through the Tamil Nadu Text Book Society. She also directed officials to provide two sets of uniforms free to the students in government and aided schools in the areas affected by the calamity. The Directorate of Government Examinations and all the universities were asked to issue duplicate certificates to candidates who had lost their certificates, she said.
