RBI order on donations
CHENNAI Jan. 1. The Reserve Bank today stated that donations for the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for tsunami relief would be accepted from the public by cash up to 4 p.m. and by cheque/demand draft up to 5 p.m. on any working day. It would issue a temporary receipt to the contributor (cheques/drafts subject to realisation) pending issuance of a pucca receipt from the PM's office for claiming rebate under Section 80 G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Contributors were advised to furnish details such as name, residential address and amount of donation in the challan available in the Deposit Accounts Department (I floor), Chennai. Cheques/drafts should be drawn in favour of RBI - A/C Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, said a notification.
`Lost and found' system
CHENNAI JAN. 1. Anna University will instal a computer-based `lost and found' system in Nagapattinam relief camps. It will set up eight PC stations (each consisting of one PC, one web camera and a modem) connected in the network mode to a central server. The system uses `e-milan' software, a web-based solution which facilitates the lost people to get in touch with their near and dear, posting their photographs and details on a central server that can be accessed from anywhere using a modem and a telephone line.
Undervaluation of consignment
CHENNAI JAN. 1. Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Chennai, have seized 3.6 lakh pieces of foreign-made toilet soap imported in two containers by a Chennai-based importer from Singapore at a customs freight station in the city. According to B.S.V. Murthy, Additional Director-General, DRI, Chennai, on examination, the consignment was found to consist 2,522 cartons of foreign-made toilet soaps totalling 3,63,168 pieces. In the invoice and other documents, the cost, insurance and freight value was declared as Singapore $20,176. On searching the importer's premises, the DRI officers recovered the original invoice of the Singapore supplier which indicated the value of the consignment as Singapore $80,767,05.
Special teams to probe murder
Tuticorin Jan. 1. Four special teams have been formed to probe the murder of Aladi Aruna, former MP, at Alankulam on Friday. The Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli (Rural), Anand Kumar Somani, said: "We are probing all aspects of the happenings, and thoroughly examining the motives behind the murder".
New road projects for State
NEW DELHI JAN. 1. The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu, has sanctioned 54 new projects amounting to Rs.98.85 crores for widening, strengthening and improving the riding quality of roads, besides construction or reconstruction of bridges and culverts in Tamil Nadu. Besides significantly benefiting the people socially, these projects would have a positive impact on the State's economy. These projects are in addition to the road projects worth Rs.140 crores already sanctioned under the Central Road Fund Scheme for carrying out works in Tamil Nadu. Some of the major projects are: widening the existing single lane to intermediate lane on NH-49-Extension in Bodimethu; improvement of riding quality of NH-209 in Palani; strengthening the road including reconstruction of minor bridges in NH-67 in Sengipatti; widening and strengthening in NH-67 in Karur; improvement to the steep gradient on NH-209 in Oddanchatram; and strengthening of NH-205 in Tiruvallur and NH-208 in Vasudevanallur besides widening the existing single lane to two-lane on NH-49 in Rameswaram.
Award for Seshagopalan
CHENNAI JAN. 1. Carnatic musician Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan was today conferred with the `Namasankeerthana Ratna' Birudhu by M. Balamuralikrishna on behalf of the G.K. Foundation Trust here. He presented a ponnadai, a certificate and a cash award of Rs. 5,000 to Mr. Seshagopalan. Mr. Balamuralikrishna wanted musicians to keep pace with changes in music and at the same time preserve the traditional values. "Carnatic musicians have to attach great importance to `Namasankeerthanas', still relevant to the present-day younger generation". R. Ramachandran, honorary secretary, Hamsadhwani, appealed to the Trusts to help young artistes. P.K. Krishnamani, managing trustee, traced the growth of organisation since its inception in 1998.
Electric wires
stolen
TUTICORIN JAN. 1. The police are searching for some unidentified persons, who stole electric wires from a power distribution line at Sawyerpuram recently. Police said electric wires to a length of 911 metres were missing from the distribution line between the Nattathy- Meenakshipuram stretch. The loss was estimated at Rs 17,150. A case was registered in this regard, based on a complaint from Sembulingam, Junior Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
Man held for attacking wife
TUTICORIN JAN. 1. Manikandan (29) was arrested for allegedly attacking his wife with a knife here on Friday. Police said the arrest was made on the complaint of one Jothilakshmi, that suspecting her fidelity her husband assaulted her at Sathya Nagar under South police station limits. The complainant, who was injured in the attack, was admitted to Tuticorin Government Hospital.
Case against
four persons
TUTICORIN JAN. 1. The police have registered a case against four persons on a charge of stealing machinery from a ginning factory at Naalattin Pudur near here recently. According to police sources, the cases were registered on the basis of a complaint from one Thirumalai Nainar, that four persons Narayanaswamy, Alagurusamy, Kandasamy Naicker and Durairaj, had stolen machinery worth Rs. 15 lakh from the ginning factory. Cases were registered under Sections 484, 341, 342 and 380 of Indian Penal Code. The police have launched an intensive search for the accused.
