This Day That Age
Dr. S.S. Bhatnagar, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Natural Resources and Scientific Research and Chairman of the University Grants Commission, died following a heart attack in New Delhi at 8.30 pm on January 1. He was 60. Prime Minister Nehru, who personally looks after India's atomic energy and scientific development programmes, was telephonically informed of the death of Dr. Bhatnagar, who, during the seven years of Independence, had been one of his ablest aides in organising fifteen national laboratories for scientific research. Dr. Bhatnagar was awarded Padma Vibhushan (Dusra-Varg) on Independence Day this year when the award was first instituted.
