This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru declared in Calcutta on January 1 that "despite the complexities of the problems facing the world today, the chances of peace are better than they were previously." Mr. Nehru said he did not believe in military aid being given to Asian countries. "The problem in Asia is not a military one primarily, but a socio-economic problem." Forgetting this factor and thinking in terms of military aid was both an unrealistic and ununderstandable approach. Mr. Nehru was optimistic about the proposed Afro-Asian conference and said it would help in strengthening the cause of peace. The Prime Minister was addressing a press conference at the Raj Bhavan immediately on his return from Indonesia.
