BELGAUM, JAN. 2. The Department of Public Works is upgrading 737.39 km of major district roads into State highways this financial year. According to the district in-charge Minister, Prakash B. Hukkeri, and the in-charge Chief Engineer of Dharwad circle, Prabhakar Chinni, the total length of State highways passing through the district will thus increase from 1,173 km to 1,910.39 km. The work has begun in Belgaum and Chikkodi subdivisions. The State Government has released Rs. 247 lakhs for improvement and maintenance of roads in the two taluks. Of this, Rs. 197 lakhs is for works to be taken up in the Assembly segments of Uchagaon, Belgaum and Bagewadi in Belgaum taluk, while Rs. 50 lakhs will be spent in Chikkodi taluk. The grant has been released under the Chief Minister's Rural Road Development Fund. In Uchagaon constituency, Rs. 71 lakhs will be spent on improving the Desur-Nandihalli road, the Belgaum-Belgundi road, the Uchagaon-Kowad road, the Hindalga-Mannur-Gojage road, the Vadagaon-Yellur-Rajanunsgad road, the Jamboti-Rabkavi road and Alluminium Factory Road. In Belgaum constituency, Mazine Link Road and College Link Road in the city, the Raichur-Bachi road and the Jamboti-Rabkavi road will be improved at a cost of Rs. 63 lakhs. The Halga-Tarihal road, the Bagewadi-Basapur road and the Jamboti-Rabkavi road will be improved at a cost of Rs. 63 lakhs in Bagewadi constituency. In Chikkodi taluk, the Shettihalli-Ichalkaranji road (79.5 km to 87.5 km, Sadalga to Borgaon) will be improved at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs, the Sankeshwar-Sadalga road (48.6 km to 51.8 km, Bedakihal to Sadalga) at Rs. 20 lakhs and the road between Neej Cross and the State border on Ichalkaranji Road at Rs. 20 lakhs. In addition to this, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has sanctioned Rs. 17.2 crores under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund. The funds will be utilised to improve 79.15 km of roads. Mr. Hukkeri said the Government has sanctioned Rs. 3.9 crores under the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for road improvement works in the district. Repairs are going on in three sections, while work on another section will be taken up soon. The process of awarding contracts through tenders has been taken up. He said the Government has decided to construct 348 classrooms at a cost of Rs. 5.2 crores in the district. The classrooms will have a common design and will be completed by March-end.
