`Gram panchayat polls likely in March'

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, JAN. 2. The population-based delimitation of constituencies has led to an increase in the number of members of gram panchayats in the district, the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer, K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, has said.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said that the process of delimitation of constituencies was almost complete and reservation of constituencies will be announced along with the publication of the calendar of events by the State Election Commission. The process of reserving constituencies will start with the Government announcing the guidelines for reservation and elections to gram panchayats are likely to be held in the first week of March, he added.

Gazette

Mr. Gowda said that the State Election Commission is preparing for the gram panchayat elections and issued a gazette notification regarding the delimitation of constituencies of gram panchayats recently. The district administration has submitted a proposal to the election commission with regards the delimitation of taluk and zilla panchayats on the basis of population and is waiting for approval, he said.

The number of members in 258 gram panchayats in Hassan district had increased from 3,450 to 3,711 due to delimitation of constituencies. He clarified that there is no change in the number of gram panchayats even though 261 new gram panchayat constituencies were created. In the recent delimitation, a constituency was allotted to a population of 400 persons and the polling station pattern would also be changed accordingly, he said. Instead of setting up polling stations in every gram panchayat, the pattern adopted for Assembly elections will be followed. This will reduce the number of polling stations to 1,200 from the present 2,391, he added.

Increase

He said that the number of members in the zilla panchayat will increase from 37 to 39 and the number of members in taluk panchayats will increase from 139 to 148. There will be a representative for a population of 10,000 in taluk panchayats and 40,000 in zilla panchayats, he added.

The Sathyamagala gram panchayat in Hassan taluk has the highest number of members (29), he added.
