Iraqi National Guards killed in attack

BAGHDAD, JAN. 2. A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb north of Baghdad on Sunday, killing 19 Iraqis — all but one of them National Guards — in another strike against Iraqis cooperating with American forces, the U.S. military said. Four Iraqi policemen were killed while on patrol in a separate attack.

The U.S. announced it had significantly increased troop numbers in Mosul to provide security ahead of January 30 elections. The city has seen stepped-up militant attacks on both American and Iraqi forces in the weeks since U.S. troops captured the guerilla stronghold of Fallujah in mid-November.

Six guardsmen were also wounded in the car bomb blast near Balad, 80 km north of Baghdad. The blast went off when a bus they were riding passed close to a U.S. base.

In a separate attack on Sunday against an Iraqi police vehicle in Samarra, 95 km north of Baghdad, four policemen were killed and one was wounded, the military said.

Both Samarra and Balad are in the so-called Sunni Triangle, the scene of frequent assaults on U.S. and Iraqi security forces. ``Those responsible for suicide attacks are seeking to halt Iraq's progress on the path to democracy,'' the U.S. Army said. — AP
