`Former official trying to destabilise Govt.'

Bangalore Jan. 2. The former spokesman of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Mohan Kumar Kondajji has alleged that a former Chief Secretary to the Government is attempting to destablise the State Government and that the time has come to expose him.

In a statement to the press, Mr. Kondajji alleged that the retired official had tried to influence the State Cabinet on the issue of accepting the interim report of the K.C. Reddy Committee on the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project.

He had allegedly contacted some members of the Cabinet before it met. Mr. Kondajji said that the Governor had objected to the action of the former Chief Secretary in recommending the names of some members of the Karnataka Administrative Service with "tainted records" to the IAS. The City Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal had set aside those selections to the IAS.

He further said that the former official had capitalised even on the tragedy that befell the former minister H. Nagappa, who died while in the custody of the forest brigand Veerappan, to get the top post. He had effectively used the caste card at that time.

Concert by Bombay Jayashri

Bangalore jan. 2. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India will organise a fund-raising concert "Raga Shri" featuring Bombay Jayashri on January 7 at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall in the city.

The funds raised from the concert will go towards the benefit of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. MS is a disabling neurologiocal disease of the central nervous system affecting the brain and the spinal cord. It affects with the brains ability to control functions such as seeing, walking, talking and so on.

The symptoms include blurring of vision, loss of eyesight, numbness, poor co-ordination, unusual fatigue and so on. The funds could help buy wheelchairs, walkers and crutches and help organise physiotherapy for them, according to the society members. Tickets for the concert will be available at K.C. Panel to meet Dharam Singh

BIJAPUR JAN. 2. A delegation of Bijapur-Gadag Broad gauge Action Committee is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Monday to get cleared the pending bill with regard to gauge conversion work.

As per the cost sharing agreement it reached with the Railways, the State has to release Rs. 61 crores as its share towards expenditure spent so far.

In a statement, the convenor of the committee, Ghanashyam Toshniwal, said that the delegation would also meet the Janata Dal (Secular) president and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, to press the demand.

Cong. membership drive

Belgaum Jan. 2. The Belgaum District Congress Committee has surpassed the target set for membership enrolment in the State. According to the BDCC Secretary, L.B. Karale, the membership drive taken up in all the 2886 Booths in all the 29 Block Congress Committees, evoked good response and the target achievement ranged from 100 per cent to 325 per cent. The target touched as high as 325 per cent in Sadalga. Sadalga Assembly constituency is represented by the district incharge and Minister for Agriculture Marketing, Prakash B. Hukkeri. The total membership fee collected accounted for Rs. 6,58,775, he said.

MLA not to seek re-election

TUMKUR JAN. 2. C. Channigappa, Minister for Sericulture, who represents Koratagere (Tumkur district) in the Assembly, has said that he will not seek re-election to the Assembly from there, but has decided to contest from the Chikballapur Lok Sabha seat, whenever the next Parliament election is held. Mr. Channigappa, senior leader of Janata Dal (Secular) was replying to felicitations by the people of Koratagere on Saturday. That was his first visit to the town after he became Minister.

Jayanti celebrations

BANGALORE JAN. 2. The 1045th Jayanthi celebrations of Adijagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Bhagavathpadaru of Suttur Guru Parampara will be held in Bangalore from January 9 to 15. The week-long celebrations will feature spiritual, literary, social and cultural programmes. Obtains anticipatory bail

Bangalore Jan. 2. B. Krishna Bhat, social worker who is facing a criminal case filed against him by the Karnataka Pradesh Kurubara Sangha, has obtained anticipatory bail from the tenth Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge, Basavaraj S. Tadahal. The Sangha had complained to the Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, on December 24 that Mr. Bhat had belittled the Kuruba community through an advertisement issued by him to a newspaper on the issue of demolition of the Kanaka Gopura in Udupi. The Cubbon Park police had registered the case against Mr. Bhat.

Appointed

BANGALORE JAN. 1. R.K. Shivaram, Deputy Director (Publications) in the Department of Information has been appointed Joint Director for South Zone at Mysore in the same department, according to a press release issued here on Saturday.

Students win prizes

MYSORE JAN. 2 . Students of the JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing have won at the "Sri S.R. Lakshmi Narasimhaiah Memorial Rolling Inter-College Music Competition" in the singing and dance competition conducted by Amara Kala Sangha, says a release.

Aditya and Aparna of the institute won the first prize for folk dance and light music, respectively.

The two students have won the prizes for the second consecutive year, the release adds.

Three killed

in accident

MANGALORE JAN. 2. Three persons, including a woman and a girl, were killed and as many seriously injured when a car and a lorry collided at Valachhil near here on National Highway 48 this evening, the police said.

The victims are Francis Pinto, 76, Poulin Vegas, 40, and Elin Vegas, 8. The former died in hospital and the latter two on the spot. The injured have been admitted to a private hospital. They were travelling in the car to the city.

The accident took place when the driver of the car attempted to overtake a bus and hit the lorry, the police said. It is not known from where the victims are from. The Mangalore Rural Police have registered a case.

Computer course

MYSORE JAN. 2. The University Computer Centre, in association with ECIT, is offering short-term courses in E-CRAFT and DTP (desk top publishing) from Friday and a six-month diploma course in computer hardware and networking from January 17.

The E-CRAFT course will focus on the fundamentals of computers, operating systems, MS Office 2000 and Internet, while the DTP course content includes MS Word 2000, Page Maker, Corel Draw and introduction to Photoshop. Students, professionals, employees and others may register by Friday for the short-term courses.

MYSORE JAN. 2. The Indian Medical Association, Mysore branch, has decided to raise funds for tsunami victims and urged all members of the association and the medical fraternity to contribute liberally.

Bird adopted

MYSORE JAN. 2. The Youth Club of Mysore Zoo of Orchids School at Ramakrishna Nagar has adopted a peacock and a crocodile for one year.

Sreekanta Balika Proudashala of Agrahara, Mysore, has adopted two lovebirds for the same period under the adoption of animals scheme.

The two institutions have paid Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 1,000, respectively, as adoption charges.

The zoo authorities have expressed happiness over the involvement of the institutions in wildlife conservation.

Best team

MYSORE JAN. 2 . The SDM Institute for Management Development, Mysore, has won the overall performance trophy for the best team at the postgraduate level and won prizes in various events conducted at the all-India management fest, "Cognizance 2004."

The event was organised by Mahajana First Grade College.

The SDM institute was represented by Kiran, Manish Jain, Radhika Kamat, Suman, Suryakanth Basava and Vipin Bhandari.
