CHITRADURGA, JAN. 2. S.R. Umashankar, Deputy Commissioner of Chitradurga, has asked officials to take help from the people to identify underground water sources in rural areas. Chairing a meeting of officers of the district here on Saturday, he instructed them to take steps to solve the drinking water problem in villages.
Problem may intensify
"This problem may become more severe as the district did not receive rains in November and December. Around 324 villages are already facing drinking water crisis," he said. He suggested that officers make arrangements for taking over 500 private borewells on contract basis. He also promised to pay compensation to farmers who will lose their summer crops if their borewells are taken over by the administration. An action plan of Rs. 12 crores has been chalked out for employment generation works in the district under the food-for-work scheme, Mr. Umashankar said. He hoped that this time the district will get enough food grains under scheme. Narayanaswamy, Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat; S.H. Vijay Kumar, Headquarters' Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner; Shamla Ahmed, Assistant Commissioner; Ram Das, Municipal Commissioner of Chitradurga; and other officers were present at the meeting.
