Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 2. Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera has paid tribute to the Pondicherry Government for role in maintaining law and order in the Union Territory. Presenting full details on the crime picture and also the better detection trend in respect of various cases, the Lt. Governor told a press conference here on Saturday that occurrence of heinous crimes had declined as could be evidenced by the statistics in 2004 against the cases reported in the preceding year. Mr. Lakhera said that while 29 cases of murder occurred in 2003 the number fell to 26 in the just concluded year. There were 31 cases of attempted murder in 2003 while there were only 16 in the following year. In all, against 223 cases in 2003 in different categories the Union Territory had only 144 cases in 2004. This meant that there was a decline in the number of crimes and hence law and order was well maintained. When his attention was drawn to the pleas made by political leaders and others that Goondas Act should be enforced the Lt. Governor said that everyone had a right to air their views.
