BCs seek fair deal

HYDERABAD: The convention of Backward Classes organised here on Sunday passed a resolution demanding reservation for BCs in legislature. The convention regretted what it called the `raw deal' meted out to Backward Classes. Leaders complained that the Congress Government was also indifferent to the sufferings of the community. The meeting demanded strengthening of the BC Finance Corporation, rechristening of all BC study circles as Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and celebration of January 3 as Women Teachers Day.

Resolutions demanding reservation in the private sector, in promotions to the Government employees, BC women in legislature and caste-wise census were passed.

Abolition of creamy layer in BC quota, statutory powers for the National BC Commission, creation of a separate ministry for OBC at Centre and uniform policy of reservations in all States were the other resolutions passed at the meeting.

DSC candidates plan rally

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association and DSC 2003 Candidates' Association (teachers) have called `Chalo Hyderabad' rally on January 7 to press the demand for the candidates' appointment.

Members of the association will gather at Sundarayya Park and take out a rally to Indira Park. Later they will present a memorandum to the Chief Minister. R. Krishnaiah, president, BC Welfare Association, and P. Bhupathi Rao, DSC Candidates' Association, in a statement here on Sunday demanded immediate appointment of candidates.

Outbreak of gastroenteritis

CUDDAPAH: Gastroenteritis broke out in parts of Proddatur town leading to hospitalisation of about 50 persons on Sunday. Residents of Sanjeevanagar, Swarajyanagar and Srinivasa Nagar complained of nausea and dehydration and were admitted to the Proddatur Government hospital and private hospitals. Alleged contamination of drinking water supply with sewage due to damaged pipelines led to the outbreak of the disease, according to official sources.

The Proddatur in-charge Municipal Chairman, R. Prasada Reddy and the Municipal Commissioner, Gopalakrishna Reddy, visited the areas.

Small farmer's big gesture

Kakinada: Godavarti Sarweswerarao, a small farmer of Kapileswerapuram village near here, has donated Rs. 58, the sale proceeds of the vegetables grown in his backyard, to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for tsunami victims.

The farmer walked all the way from his village to the Collectorate, a distance of 50 km, on Saturday and handed over the amount to the Collector.

Red Cross Society's aid

HYDERABAD: The State branch of Indian Red Cross Society has collected blankets, bedsheets, old clothes, rice, dal, utensils and medicines and despatched them to the six tsunami-hit districts. It received till date Rs.15.95 lakhs as donations.

K. Rajyalakshmi, secretary, said in a press release on Sunday that two cartons of medicines to Kumbakonam and 90 milk powder packets were sent to Sri Lanka following requests from local officials.

The society secretaries in Krishna, Prakasam, Guntur, Nellore and East and West Godavari districts organised relief camps and provided necessary assistance to the victims. She said people could offer donations either in cash or in material to the Red Cross Society at its office 3-2-212, Street No.15, Himayatnagar, Hyderabad.

Three landmines unearthed

KURNOOL: The police unearthed three powerful landmines near Rollapenta in Nallamala forest of Atmakur in Kurnool district on Sunday. Two of the landmines, each weighing seven kg, were stuffed in plastic buckets while the other was in an aluminum box.

The mines were believed to have been planted six months ago to target officials who had to travel on the metal road to reach Peddacheruvu.

Government decision hailed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association on Sunday welcomed the GO constituting a committee to look into the problems of land distribution in the State. P. Ramayya, MLA and president, and B. Venkat, general secretary, in a statement suggested that the committee should ensure that all poor families were allotted agricultural land.

They said the GO outlined working of the seven-member committee which would submit its report within six months. It would study the land distribution pattern in the State and suggest steps for more efficient allotment, if required, even by reviewing the relevant acts.

GATT agreement opposed

HYDERABAD: The All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) and the All-India Students' Federation (AISF) have called upon people to oppose the establishment of educational institutions by foreigners in the country that is now possible with the GATT agreement coming into effect from this month.

In a statement here, G. Eashwaraiah, AIYF State secretary, and N. Raja Reddy, AISF State secretary, said that the agreement allows 145 countries to set up their universities in India and this opened the gates for private institutions, who now would try to lure Indian students to work for the betterment of multi-national companies in other countries.

Action against sarpanch urged

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Health and Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Employees' Union on Sunday demanded severe punishment to the sarpanch of Peddanarlapalli (Visakhapatnam district) for allegedly molesting a health worker. Ch. Rojarani, co-convener of the union's women's wing, in a statement here wanted the Sarpanch arrested. She called upon the Government hospital employees to agitate till the district administration took action against the offender.

Case against MP

MAHABUBNAGAR: The Atmakur police on Sunday registered a case against P. Madhu, Rajya Sabha member and senior CPI(M) leader, and 50 others for violating prohibitory orders in Amarchinta. The police intervened when the party activists gathered in the village and were about to take out a procession. The ban orders were imposed following a clash between activists of the CPI (M) and the BJP over performance of `bharat mata' pooja in a temple on Tuesday night.

A group of CPI (M) workers entered into altercation with BJP activists when the latter were on their way to home after performing the pooja. This was followed by an `attack' on BJP workers. In retaliation, the BJP activists allegedly attacked the CPI(M) office and ransacked furniture.

Nominated

KURNOOL: The State Government constituted the Juvenile Justice Board and the District Legal Services Authority by nominating non-judicial members. The social activist, D. Narasimhachar, was nominated to the Juvenile Justice Board while the Second Additional First Class Magistrate at Kurnool will be the judicial member on the Board, which has jurisdiction over the district. Mr. Narasimhachar, will have a three-year term.

The advocates -- N. Sreeramulu, P. Nirmala, K.S. Jaffar Mohinddin Khadri and G. Nagalakshmi Reddy -- were nominated to the District Legal Services Authority. They will have a term of two-years.

NELLORE: A student of Vakadu, N. Subramanyam, has been selected for the National Athletics Championship, to be held in Pune on January 10. He got qualified at the State athletics meet held at Khammam, last month.

Ph.D awarded

NELLORE: B. Radhakrishna Reddy, History Lecturer, KAC Government Junior College, Nellore, has been declared eligible for the award of Ph.D. degree by Sri Venkateswara Universtiy, Tirupati, for his thesis entitled `Nellore through the Ages'.

Cricket tourney

NELLORE: The 18th district-level cricket tournament under the auspices of Basava Ramatarakam Memorial Trust will be held at Narayanareddipet, near Nellore town, on January 9. The tournaments will be on knockout basis.

Training camp

for workers

CUDDAPAH: Revival of socialist policies is the need of the hour to safeguard workers' interests, asserted CITU leaders on Sunday.

The CITU district president, A. Raghunatha Reddy, and other leaders addressed a training camp for United Electricity Employees Union members here. They wanted the UPA Government to implement the Common Minimum Programme. The promise to uphold workers' right to strike must be fulfilled by an enactment in Parliament.

Cycle yatra

CUDDAPAH: About 100 activists of Backward Classes United Front launched a bicycle yatra on Sunday to promote communal harmony.

The six-day yatra would cover all the 51 mandals in the district and preach communal amity, its district president, T. Baludu, said after flagging off the rally. The `Go' (Cow) Rakshana Samithi president, Venkatarathnam, said the yatris would make night halts in ashrams and temples and return to Cuddapah on January 7 evening. The yatra was led by C. Easwaraiah.

CUDDAPAH: Youth Congress functionaries launched a signature campaign here on Sunday in favour of the YSR Government's `Jala Yagnam' to complete irrigation projects.

The DCC president, Shaik Hussain, inaugurated it by signing on a banner on RS Road here and Cuddapah MLA, Md. Ahmedullah, TTD Board member, M. Navaneeswara Reddy and others participated. The banner would be submitted to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on January 3.

CITU to

back stir

NALGONDA: The district committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has extended full support to the general strike proposed by insurance employees on January 4. The CITU general secretary, T. Veera Reddy, in a press release on Sunday appealed to all categories of employees of all unions and federations to participate in the strike. He criticised the United Progressive Alliance Government for `acting against the spirit' of the Common Minimum Programme.

Plea for hike

NALGONDA: The Senior Citizens' Welfare Association has urged the Government to increase pension for elderly persons and widows.

The association's president, S. Mallikarjun, and the general secretary, M. Narayana, said pension of Rs. 75 per month was insufficient. Therefore, they urged the Government to increase it to Rs. 300 and also allocate 25 kg of rice for the aged and widows.

WARANGAL: The organising secretary, Backward Classes Cell, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, V. Sadasivudu, of Warangal, has been nominated member, All India Handloom Board.

In charges

appointed

WARANGAL: The District Congress Committee (DCC) president, G. V. Ramana Reddy, has appointed in charges in six Assembly constituencies for mobilising donations for tsunami relief work. Following the directive of the AICC, the DCC decided to collect donations from individuals and organisations in Shayampet, Dornakal, Cheriyal, Hanamkonda, Mahabubabad and Parkal constituencies. The cheques and drafts should be drawn in favour of Rajiv Gandhi National Relief and Welfare Trust or the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, Mr. Reddy said.

`Kalash yatra'

NIZAMABAD: As a prelude to the week-long mega religious programme, the rendition of Divya Sreerama Katha by Sri Ramesh Bhaiji Oja (Bhai Sri) a `kalash yatra' was taken out from Devimata Mandir on the Devi Road to Sakethdam at Shradhanand Ganj, in town on Sunday. A large number of women dressed in a special set of clothes with copper vessels and coconuts on their heads followed Bhai Sri to Sakethdam, the venue of the programme. Earlier, Bhai Sree, on his arrival from Hyderabad performed poojas at Saibaba temple, Madhavnagar. Thereafter he was taken in a motorcycle rally by youth to Khanapur village where he would be staying till January 10. The programme will commence on Monday in which hundreds of people are expected to take part.
