ITBP gesture for tsunami-hit

NEW DELHI JAN. 2. The Director General of ITBP, K.J. Singh, handed over a cheque for Rs. 70 lakhs to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, as a token of help from ITBP Himveers for the people affected by the tsunami waves in the south Indian States. The amount has been voluntarily donated by the ITBP personnel. Rescue teams of the ITBP have already reached Car Nicobar and are engaged in rescue and relief of the affected people, an ITBP release said.

Ulema delegation meets L-G

NEW DELHI JAN. 2. A delegation of Muslim Ulema led by the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, met the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, at Raj Niwas here today to express its deep sense of hurt over the demolition of religious structures in the Yamuna Pushta area by the Delhi Development Authority.

After hearing out the delegates, Mr. Joshi said he would feel deeply hurt if any disrespect was shown to any religious objects while clearing the structures. Assuring the delegation that proper action will be initiated in the matter; Mr. Joshi said an enquiry would be held in a time-bound manner to determine the full-facts regarding the demolition of religious structures at Yamuna Pushta.

The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, who was also present during the meeting, conveyed to Mr. Joshi the hurt sentiments of the community over the incident and requested him to find a solution to the problem.

It was finally decided that the enquiry would start immediately and the dialogue with the religious leaders would also continue.

Road safety week

NEW DELHI JAN. 2. Every year Road Safety Week is observed throughout the country in January with a view to raise the level of awareness on road safety. This year, the 16th National Road safety week will be observed from January 3 to 9. The theme this year is "Road Safety is No Accident".

The Delhi Traffic Police have chalked out a week-long programme for all categories of road users, including school children, which will focus on road safety march, exhibitions, film shows, lectures, cultural programmes, training and distribution of road safety literatures, and display of banners with road safety messages. All the staff of the traffic police will participate in the special drive.

Kannada conference

NEW DELHI JAN. 2. The two-day 22nd National Conference of the Kannada-speaking people will be held in the Capital from April 9. Announcing this here today, the convenor of the conference, M.B. Samaga, said the conference organised by "Dehali Kannadiga", a Kannada monthly, will include seminars on Kannada language, literature, culture, poets' meet and women's festival. Seminar on linguistic and inter-state harmony, music, dance, book exhibition and drama would also be part of the conference.

About 2,000 delegates from all over the country including writers, artists, professors, academicians and representatives of Kannada associations are expected to participate.
