Ganguly, Gandhi on song

KOLKATA, JAN. 2. Propelled by a gutsy 121 by Sourav Ganguly, Bengal reached 294 for six against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Elite group `A' league match here at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

With Bengal still adrift by 98 runs, the seventh wicket pair of Devang Gandhi (77) and all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla were on the crease to take on the host's battle against a possible relegation on the final day.

Resuming at 70 for four, Bengal lost its night watchman S.S. Lahiri cheaply before Ganguly (121, 213 balls, 4x17) and Gandhi scripted the revival with a 167-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Ganguly fell to Sanjay Pandey with the score at 273, leaving seasoned Gandhi to continue the battle.

Brief scores: Madhya Pradesh 392 vs Bengal 294 for six (S. Ganguly 121, D. Gandhi 77 batting)
