VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN.2. The Tummapala sugar factory in Anakapalle of the district was on Sunday re-opened and crushing began. The Commercial Taxes Minister, Konathala Ramakrishna, who inaugurated the crushing work, described the re-opening of the unit as V.V. Ramana Sugar Factory as historic and said it was a New Year gift to farmers and workers. Of the Rs. 60 crores sanctioned for the re-opening, Rs.1.1 crores had been released for repairs, the Minister said. He complimented the workers, who had put in hard effort and completed the overhaul at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs. Mr. Ramakrishna said there were plans to increase the capacity from the present 50 tonnes to 2,500 tonnes in the next two years. The sugarcane that arrived for crushing was 70,000 tonnes and if it could be increased by another one lakh tonnes the factory was likely to earn a profit of Rs. 1 crore. The Minister assured that salaries would be paid to all the workers and temporary workers would be employed on seniority basis. MLAs--Kanna Babu, Gurumurthy Reddy, Dharmasri, Gandi Babji, Karri Sitaram--the factory in-charge managing director, B. Rama Rao, also participated.
