Private bus claims two lives

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 2. An elderly woman and a man were killed and 28 passengers suffered injuries when a rashly- driven private bus hit a car, crossed over the central verge and collided head-on with a Delhi Transport Corporation bus near Bhagirathi water treatment plant at Gokalpuri in North-East Delhi today. While the injured were taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur and Panchsheel hospitals, the condition of a young man was stated to be serious.

The incident occurred on Wazirabad Road around 3 p.m. when the private bus plying on route No. 263, which was going from Loni to Khajuri crossing, hit a Maruti car. The driver lost control and the speeding vehicle crossed over the central verge and collided head-on with the DTC bus coming from the opposite side. Almost all the private bus passengers sustained injuries. The police said there were no passengers in the DTC bus, which was going to the Nandnagri bus depot.

Fire service personnel and local police joined hands to rescue the victims trapped in the mangled bus. Most of the victims suffered head injuries and at least five of them had fractures. While 26 of them were taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, others were taken to Panchsheel Hospital at Yamuna Vihar.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of the Police (North-East Delhi), Anurag Kumar, a woman in her 60s, later identified as Raghuragi Devi, succumbed to her injuries on way to the hospital, while Jaggu Ram (50) died in hospital.

The police said the erring driver also sustained multiple fractures in the leg and was admitted to hospital. The Maruti car occupants, however, escaped unhurt.

A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at Gokalpuri police station and further investigations are on.
