Eight-year-old killed in road accident

BANGALORE, JAN. 2. Eight-year-old Jyothi was knocked down by a van while she was crossing the Rajendraprasad Road in Ganapathipuram in Banashankari Traffic Police Station limits.

The accident occurred at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Jyothi, daughter of Mr. Rajendra, died on the way to a hospital. Her body was handed over to her relatives after a post-mortem at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and handed over to the relatives.

Two die in accidents

In another road accident reported from Sarjapur Road in Adugodi Traffic Police Station limits at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Shankar (28), a scooterist, was run over by a truck near Agara military compound.

The police said Shankar died at St. John's Hospital.

A man was knocked down by a BMTC bus on K.R. Puram bridge on Sunday afternoon. The victim was aged about 35.

The K.R. Puram traffic police said the victim died on the spot. The accident took place at about 1.30 p.m. when the victim was walking on the bridge. The bus hit him from behind, the police said.

Chain snatched

Fifty-year-old Uma was robbed of her gold chain worth about Rs. 35,000 by a man at Bhuvaneshwarinagar in Hebbal Police Station limits on Saturday evening.

The victim was returning with vegetables from a market near Coffee Board Layout when the culprit held her neck from behind, snatched the chain and ran away. The Hebbal police are investigating.

Convicted

A city court convicted two persons, Nagaraja and Manju, who had assaulted a lonely woman and robbed her jewellery in Vijayanagar Police Station limits on September 9, 2002. While the first accused was convicted to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four years and pay a fine of Rs. 5,000, the second accused was given a punishment of seven years' rigorous imprisonment, a penalty of Rs. 5,000 and a further imprisonment of six months if he failed to pay the fine.

Arrested

The Wilson Garden police arrested Kumar alias Mathi Kumar (25) of Muneswara block, Mahalakshmi Layout, and R.K. Kumar (25) of Singapura Layout, and recovered three mobile phones worth about Rs. 30,000.

Liquor seized

The Excise Department officials have seized contraband liquor worth Rs. 5.5 lakhs being transported in a van today.

A statement issued here by the office of the Joint Commissioner of Excise, said 150 cartoons of liquor-bearing brand names carried the legend, "for Defence services only." They were concealed under 20 plastic crates. The consignment was taken to bars in the city to replace reputed brands of liquors with it.
