Carnival organisers begin estimating losses

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JAN. 2. Organisers of several carnivals on the city's beaches that were cancelled owing to high tidal waves have started evaluating the losses.

The Cherai Tourism Festival was one of the shows that was completely washed way in the high tides. Officials of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) put the loss at Rs. 20 lakhs. The high-mast lamps installed on the beach, pay-and-use toilets and parking spaces have all been damaged. Though the structure of the desalination plant was not affected by the waves, the actual damage is yet to be evaluated.

Plea to Government

"We are preparing an application to the Government to compensate these losses as part of the relief operations. "The council has no fund of its own. It will be hard for us to put the beach back on rails," said Mini Antony, Revenue Divisional Officer, who is also the secretary of DTPC.

The assessment of the loss is being made and the request would be placed before the State Government on Monday.

Another carnival that suffered losses in the calamity is the Puthuvype Beach Tourism Mela. The organisers have prepared a first estimate of losses amounting to Rs. 9 lakhs. "We had discussed the issue with the tahsildar and would present a report to the village officer on Monday," said Josey P. Thomas, chairman of the organising committee.

The organisers suffered losses as the cultural programmes began on December 23. They had secured sponsorships covering the entire 10-day festival and with the festival being cancelled halfway, the sponsors are not obliged to pay. An LCD display unit, which included a projector, DVD player and a 35-mm screen, was lost in the rising water. Only the screen was retracted, that too in a torn condition, said Mr. Thomas.

The mela also featured a beach bike race, which was called off owing to high tides. "We had invested Rs. 30,000 on trophies and laying of the track for the race," he said.

At the same time, the organisers of Cochin Carnival at Fort Kochi have not suffered much loss. "However, the artistes who had been working on tableaux for the last couple of months will lose their investment. So will small-time businessmen who pin their hopes on the crowd turnout at the carnival," said Robin Felix, general secretary of the Carnival Committee.
