KOCHI, JAN. 2 . The relief camp for tsunami-affected people at Government U.P. School, Edavanakkad, turned into a venue for a wedding reception on Sunday. The wedding of Prasanna, daughter of Kokkalathu Velayudhan of Edavanakkad, with Babu, hailing from Puloott in Kodungalloor, was solemnised at the Kodungalloor Devi Temple this morning. The marriage was scheduled to be held at her residence at Edavanakkad. But the house was flattened in the wall of waves that came crashing last Sunday. The family also lost10 sovereigns of gold and cash that it had raised for the wedding. Besides, sacks of rice, coconuts and other material that the relatives had raised were swept away. Ms. Prasanna managed to escape along with her relatives. Her parents were away at the time of the incident, visiting relatives. The distraught family had sought the help of the authorities to conduct the ceremonies. The Government and other agencies stepped in to assist the family. A sum of Rs. 40,000 was handed over by the Fisheries Minister, Dominic Presentation, to the girl on Saturday, along with saris and cash raised by various organisations and social workers. Mr. Babu, a mason working with Star Constructions, Thrissur, had rushed to the spot on hearing of the calamity that had befallen his bride's family. The reception at the relief camp today was packed with local people and well-wishers.
