TIRUPATI, JAN. 3. An international conference on `Recent Developments in Statistics and Their Applications' got under way in Sri Venkateswara University here on Monday with about 140 delegates, including faculty members, research scholars and students from all over the country participating. The delegates also included experts from abroad. Inaugurating the two-day meet being hosted by the SVU's Department of Statistics, the Vice-Chancellor, S. Jayarama Reddy, traced the relevance of statistics in all areas of human endeavour and underlined the need to impart statistical training to students.
Statistical analysis
He also referred to the importance of statistical analysis in decision making in the context of globalisation. G. P. Patil of the Pennsylvania State University, USA, explained the role of statistical methods in understanding ecology and environmental problems. J.S. Rao of the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, underscored the importance of Bayesian methods in forecasting events like the recent tsunami holocaust. M.P. Sasthry, SVU's founder professor of Statistics, explained the growth of statistics as a science and suggested the setting up of a centre for statistical research and consultation in the university to meet the needs of research works under way in various departments of the university. G.M. Naidu of Wisconsin University, USA, in his invited talk highlighted the need for observing the best practices in teaching statistics in the business schools. Statistical thinking should become a way of life, he said. J. Lakshman Rao, Principal of the SVU College of Arts and Sciences, presided over the inaugural session.
