Cotton ryots

stage protest

NALGONDA: About three hundred cotton farmers led by various political parties staged a rasta roko on the National Highway no.9 for half an hour demanding a fair deal for them at the Cotton Corporation of India's market.

According to the police sources, they raised slogans against the Government for ignoring the interests of cotton farmers, who were being exploited at the market by middlemen.

KHAMMAM: TRS leaders from the district have urged the Union Minister for Labour and Employment, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, to set up a regional sub-office of the Povident Fund at Khammam benfiting employees working in about 800 organisations in the district. In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, the former TRS State secretary, G. Shankar Rao, said employees working in far-off places in the district were finding it difficult to communicate with Provident Fund office at Warangal.

Ph.D awarded

KARIMNAGAR: A former SRR Degree College student, G. Sriranga Rao of Bonthakuntapalli village in Sultanabad mandal was awarded Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) by the Department of Economics, Osmania University, for his thesis on `Human labour absorption for sustainable agricultural development under different sources of irrigation --A case study of selected districts in Andhra Pradesh'.

Tribal sports meet

KHAMMAM: The State tribal sports meet will be held in Bhadrachalam from January 4 to 7.

The Minister for Social Welfare, D. S. Redya Naik, will inaugurate the sports meet. The Minister for Sports and Youth Services, Harish Rao, will be the chief guest. The sports meet will be organised by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) in coordination with the Department of Tribal Welfare, according to S. Suresh Kumar, ITDA project officer.

Novelist feted

KARIMNAGAR: The SRR Degree College faculty had felicitated the noted novelist and Kendra Sahitya Akademi award winner, A. Naveen, here on Monday at the college premises.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Naveen stressed on the need for reading good books to learn about the society and human values. He was associated with the college for about 12 years. The Lok Satta district president, N. Srinivas, the SRR college principal, B. Ramchander Rao, the Karimnagar Film Society secretary, Varala Anand and others also spoke on the occasion.

Revenue land

`occupied'

NALGONDA: Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), led by the Miryalguda MLA, J. Ranga Reddy, occupied 12 acres of the Revenue land at Madhavagudem in Chilukur mandal on Sunday.

About 200 activists pitched red flags in the land as a mark of take over from the hands of local landlords. The CPI(M) was forced to occupy the land as the Government had failed to respond to the plethora of representations submitted by the party requesting it to distribute the same for Dalits, Mr. Ranga Reddy told the gathering.

The CPI(M) leaders--N. Venkata Swamy, J. Baswaiah, Ramulu, Veerabhadram--also took part in the programme.

Satyam's gesture to tsunami-hit

HYDERABAD: Satyam Computer Services Limited and its employees have contributed Rs. 2.5 crores to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for taking up relief and rehabilitation operations for tsunami-hit areas in the State and Tamil Nadu. A cheque for Rs. 1 crore towards Andhra Pradesh's share in the contribution was presented to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, by Rama Raju, Managing Director, Satyam Computers, here on Monday. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola India has donated Rs. 30 lakhs for relief activities. Its general manager, Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, presented a cheque for the amount to Dr. Reddy.

Degree student ends life

CUDDAPAH: A second year B.Com student, Bhanuprakash Reddy (20), who consumed pesticide here on December 31, died at SVIMS in Tirupati on Monday. The student was rushed to Tirupati after he took pesticide in agricultural fields.

Tragic end for Inter student

CUDDAPAH: The urge to earn daily wages by going to work during holidays proved fatal for a poor Intermediate student, I. Ramasubbaiah (18), the eldest of a family of eight children, at Annavaram in Chapadu mandal. While watering a new room being built in the zilla parishad high school on Monday, he came in contact with an electric motor and died instantly.

Farmer electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: A farmer, B. Mahesh Babu (40) of Sumitranagar in Badvel, was electrocuted while replacing a burnt fuse in TG Project Colony in Gopavaram mandal on Monday. He was replacing the fuse to draw water to his field, according to the Badvel rural SI, Papaiah.

Man hacked to death by wife

CUDDAPAH: A woman, Geetha, allegedly hacked to death her husband at Alireddipalle in Vempalle mandal on Sunday night unable to bear his harassment, according to the police. An alleged alcoholic and gambling addict, V. Nagi Reddy (30), frequently harassed her and threatened to kill her and two children. Geetha confessed to the police that she hacked her inebriated husband to death with a sickle while he was asleep.

Girl poisoned to death?

VIZIANAGARAM: J. Pavitra (16), a resident of Andhra Pradesh Special Police Battalion Colony at Chintalavalasa in Denkada mandal, was allegedly poisoned by her lover, Ch. Sasi Kumar (18), an Intermediate student on Sunday evening. She died while undergoing treatment at Denkada on Monday, the Denkada SI, L. Revathamma, said. Infuriated by her parents' search for an alliance, the boy allegedly mixed pesticide in a soft drink and made her drink. Kumar was taken into custody.

73 sheep run over by bus

CUDDAPAH: Seventythree sheep perished and 37 more were grievously injured when a bus ploughed into a herd of sheep near Bhakrapet in Siddhavatam mandal on Monday. The private bus going from Tirupati to Cuddapah sped away. On being alerted by the Siddhavatam police, the Duvvur police stopped the bus by placing drums across the road and nabbed the driver.

Five killed in road accident

KHAMMAM: Five persons died in a road accident on the Khammam-Kothagudem road, near Tallada, late on Sunday night. The victims were CPI(M) supporters from Khammam. They were on their way back to Khammam after attending a party rally in Manuguru when the van carrying them collided with an oil tanker. The victims were: A. Srinivas, M. Venkataiah, K. Veerababu, B. Chinna Rosaiah and A. Anjaneyulu.

New MD of minorities finance corp.

Hyderabad: The Assistant Secretary, Minorities Welfare Department, P. Chandra Sekhar, has been appointed Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Minorities Finance Corporation (APSMFC) in place of M.A. Azeem. Mr. Sekhar has been given full additional charge of the corporation. Mr. Azeem, who is repatriated to his parent department, Revenue, is transferred on administrative grounds, it is said.

Award for Telugu writer

HYDERABAD: S.V. Satyanarayana, Telugu writer and president of the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Writers Association, has bagged the UWA Lifetime Achievement Award for 2003-04. The award will be presented in Chennai by Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, on January 9.

Precious stones unearthed

Srikakulam: Rare and precious stones worth thousands of crores of rupees were found in a village of Nandigam mandal in Srikakulam district. This treasure trove was found by the National Mining Corporation, Hyderabad, according to K.P. Choudary, Secretary of the corporation. According to a press release here on Monday, on the suggestions of experts from Germany, a team from the Central Intelligence Bureau undertook the survey and found the treasure.

Stamp papers burnt

Srikakulam: Stamp papers of Rs.500 and above denominations, all worth Rs. 3.50 crores, were torn, burnt and buried in the presence of Y. Nagi Reddy, SP, M. Veerabrahmaiah, Joint Collector, and treasury officials at the Collectorate here on Monday. Enquiries with officials revealed that in the background of Telgi scam that had rocked the nation, it had become difficult to distinguish real from fake papers. Non-judicial stamps worth Rs.98.60 lakhs were burnt on the premises of the Sub-Registrar Office, Kamareddy, Nizamabad. The Sub-Registrar, Asokh, Sudarshan, MRO, the Assistant Treasury Officer, Dasarath, and Murali Manohar, SI, were present when the stamps were set afire.

Naidu condoles Gokina's death

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has condoled the death of Gokina Rama Rao who has played a variety of roles in 500 Telugu films. Rao had an endearing personality and his death was an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry, Mr. Naidu said on Monday.
