DAVANGERE, JAN. 3. Many workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Honnali taluk led by M.P. Renukacharya, MLA, took out a procession at Honalli near here today protesting the "anti-people" policies of the Government. They criticised the Government for its decision on installing meters in houses that had been given power connections under the Bhagya Jyothi Scheme and fixing meters to irrigation pumpsets, and for non-payment of compensation under the crop insurance scheme and withdrawing yellow ration cards. The workers raised slogans against the Government and called it "inactive" and "corrupt". Mr. Renukacharya, who addressed the gathering near the tahasildar's office, alleged that the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress have come together to run the administration only to make money to fight elections, which might be held at any time. The MLA said farmers had paid the crop insurance premium for 2003 and asked the propriety of taking the average crop failure in the past three years to assess the crop failure during 2003. It amounts to cheating farmers, he alleged. In the wake of the protest by the BJP, the Krishna Government re-introduced the yellow cards. But soon after the elections, the coalition Government withdrew them. The party will launch an agitation if the Government fails to fulfil the demands of the farmers before January 20, the MLA said.
