Farmers urged to go in for short-term crops
By Our Staff Correspondent
TUMKUR,
JAN. 3.
The Irrigation Consultative Committee (ICC) attached to Hemavathy-Tumkur Canal Project, at its meeting at Gubbi today, wanted farmers to take up short-term crops such as green gram, `alasandhe,' sunflower, maize and ragi.
The meeting was attended, among others, by S.R. Srinivas, Gubbi MLA, and S. Mallikarjunaiah, Tumkur MP.
A large number of farmers, who had gathered there, were also allowed to participate in the meeting.
Quoting reports by officials in the matter, Mr. Srinivas told the farmers to desist from growing paddy as the quantity of water available in tanks in the taluk may not be sufficient for the crop. He said there will hardly be any water left in tanks by April if paddy is cultivated. The taluk will once again face drinking water problem.
