CHENNAI, JAN. 3. The Mylapore Academy presented its annual awards for dramas and television serials for 2003 on Sunday. The best stage play award went to "Swayambu" and Augusto received the director's award. The best actor was L. Kaushik and best actress was Subha Ganesh. Abinaya Creations' "Aadugiran Kannan" won the best television serial award, while the best storywriter award was bagged by K.Balachandar for his "Sahaana". Thiruselvam of "Kolangal" bagged the award among directors. L. Kaushik, who did the lead role in "Rekkai Kattiya Manasu" was the best actor, while Devayani for "Kolangal" and Kaavya Sekar for "Sahaana" received the best actress award. K.S. Bakthavatsalam, chairman, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, and S. Jagadeesan, Chairman, Intellectual Property Appellate Board, said the stage needed to be encouraged if it was to attract more artistes to theprofession. Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty, president, Brahma Gana Sabha, said the panel of judges had done a commendable job. On behalf of the awardees, director K. Balachandar, recalled that Mr. Bakthavatsalam was a good actor in his younger days and said recently when he offered the retired judge a role in a television serial, he declined politely. Among those who spoke were S. Sathiavageeswaran, chief employee relations manager, Indian Oil Corporation, Vatsala Raghu, Chief Postmaster-General, C.S. Veeraragavan, secretary of Mylapore Academy and S. Krishnamurthy, treasurer.
