UGC grant for university

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JAN.3. The University Grants Commission has sanctioned Rs.40 lakhs to the School of Religions, Philosophy and Humanist Thought of the Madurai Kamaraj University for carrying out research and activities in promoting inter-religious unity and communal harmony.

The UGC accepted the proposal submitted by the university and the sanction was made under the Special Assistance Programme for department research support, according to P.M. Ajmal Khan, Coordinator of the school and Syndicate member.

He said the assistance would be for a period of over five years during which time activities would be undertaken in three thrust areas. The university would take up scriptural and conceptual studies of religion, comparative studies of Tamil religious thought with other religious traditions and religious harmony and peacemaking in a multi-religious context.

Dr. Ajmal Khan said the implementation of the project would be done immediately. Every year national seminars would be organised besides inviting visiting professors from various places. The focus would be on communal harmony and peace, he said, adding that academic and infrastructure development would be undertaken in the school.

He said social justice and value systems would also be emphasised besides according importance to five ancient texts, including Bible, Tirukkural and Guru Granth. Two research fellows would be appointed in the school.

Stating that this school was the first non-science department to get the UGC aid, Dr. Ajmal Khan said only MK University's proposal got the approval among nine universities which approached it with proposals.
