HYDERABAD,
JAN. 3.
The police lathicharged activists of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Progressive Democratic Students' Union (PDSU) when the latter blocked the Narayanaguda intersection on Monday demanding action against Aurora Engineering College management over its student's death.
Ten agitators were taken into preventive custody and let off in the evening. Over hundred demonstrators assembled at the junction and squatted on the road bringing the traffic to a grinding halt.
Even as the traffic was held up for more than 30 minutes, the agitators refused to leave the place saying that nothing had moved despite the Technical Education Minister's assurance of serious action against the college management. With the agitating student activists not paying heed to the requests of clearing the blockade, the police resorted to lathicharge. In the absence of woman constables, the police had difficulty in shifting women demonstrators from the junction.
Mild tension prevailed as the demonstrators picked an argument and pushed away policemen when the latter tried to physically remove women protesters.
