Usha surrenders in Srikalahasti court, granted bail

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI. Jan. 4. Usha, who was questioned by the police in connection with the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Acharya Jayendra Saraswathi's arrest issue, today surrendered before the Additional Junior Civil Judge, Srikalahasti, Indira Priyadarsini, amid high drama.

She appeared before the Magistrate along with her Chennai-based lawyer, Sudha Ramalingam, around 3.30 p.m. She was remanded to judicial custody till January 12 for jumping a non-bailable warrant served on her two years ago in connection with a bank fraud case.

Medical grounds cited

Her husband, Narayanan is the prime accused in the case which involved forgery of documents and non-repayment of a loan to the tune of Rs. 32 lakhs the couple had taken from the local branch of the State Bank of India for their industrial unit near Srikalahasti. After she surrendered before the Magistrate, her advocate moved a bail petition on the ground that Usha was cancer patient and needed constant medication.

Avoids media

Granting her bail on the basis of two sureties for Rs. 10,000 each issued by Usha's brother and sister-in-law, the Magistrate ordered that she must appear before the court for every hearing without fail.

Usha, who has already secured an anticipatory bail from the District Court, Chittoor, had reached the court premises in her vehicle around 12.30 p.m. and waited in it for some time. But she left the place after members of the print and electronic media reached the court complex and tried to take her pictures.

She returned to the court only around 3.30 a.m. and rushed into the court avoiding media. She is expected to be back on January 12 for the next hearing.
