BANGALORE, JAN. 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Uttarahalli, R. Ashok, today alleged that the Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat is filling up the moat built by Kempe Gowda II (not the founder of Bangalore) in Magadi around the centuries-old fort, at the instance of the local Janata Dal (S) MLA, Balakrishna. Addressing presspersons, Mr. Ashok and the President of the Magadi unit of the BJP, H.M. Krishna Murthy, alleged that Mr. Balakrishna has faced protests by the local people. They said that according to Mr. Balakrishna, the moat should be filled to end the mosquito menace. They alleged that the zilla panchayat violated the rules laid down by the Department of Archaeology and failed to seek its permission. Mr. Ashok said the BJP will launch an agitation in Magadi on Thursday demanding steps for the immediate restoration of the moat and renovation of the fort (built in early 18th Century).
