CHENNAI, JAN. 4. The State Government today told the Madras High Court that C. Gomathi, who had levelled charges of sexual harassment and civil rights violation against a Minister and officials, was in the habit of using her caste to earn sympathy and threaten colleagues and officials. In an affidavit, filed in response to her writ petition, the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services and the Director of Medical Education contended that Dr. Gomathi's activities and rude behaviour spoiled the congenial atmosphere in various medical colleges. That was why the authorities decided to shift her to the non-teaching side. However, no disciplinary proceedings were initiated against her. On December 3 last, the Government constituted a committee for a psychiatric examination of the doctor. She did not turn up despite intimation from the Director of Medical Education on December 10. The test was to take place on December 15. Denying her allegations, the officials said she had not stated anything of that sort in her application before the State Administrative Tribunal. The Chennai Police Commissioner filed a separate counter-affidavit, holding that Dr. Gomathi had not come to the court with "clean hands." Justice K.P. Sivasubramaniam posted the matter to Wednesday for further hearing. On December 13, Justice D. Murugesan directed the Government to explain what action was taken on the doctor's complaints against the Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, and Health department officials.
