CHANDIGARH, JAN. 4. Cold conditions sweeping most parts of north India today showed little signs of abating, with Narnaul in Haryana turning out to the be the coldest in the plains recording a low of zero degree and Amritsar in Punjab shivering at 0.7 degree Celsius, three degree below normal. The low at Patiala also dropped by a degree to 6.1, while Ludhiana recorded a minimum of 7.5, one degree above normal range, according to the Meteorological Department here. The respective maximum temperatures at Amritsar, Patiala and Ludhiana were recorded at 16.4, 19.7 and 18.4 degree Celsius. The night temperature at Chandigarh plunged by two degrees to record 5.4 C. The maximum settled at 20 C. The cold conditions also tightened grip over Haryana with Ambala recording a low of 5.6. Hisar had a low of 7.8, Karnal 6.5 and Rohtak 5.6. The respective highs at these places were recorded at 19.5, 19, 19.1 and 20 degrees. The icy winds sweeping most parts of Kashmir Valley further intensified the cold wave. Srinagar recorded a low of 0.9 and Jammu 7.3. Sun shone brightly across Uttar Pradesh today after showers and hailstorm yesterday. In Himachal Pradesh, the capital Shimla recorded a temperature of 1.3 C after the town received the season's first snowfall yesterday. The maximum there today settled at 12.6 C. Bhuntar had a low of 0.8 C and a high of 13.1 C. Sundernagar in H.P. was also cold recording a low of 0.7 C and a high of 16.8 C. Fog affected normal life at Udhampur, Amritsar, Adampur, Halwara, Ambala, Sirsawa, Sirsa, Suratgarh and Bathinda. Meanwhile, in Rajasthan, Pilani was the coldest at four degrees even as a slight fall in night temperature gave no respite from the on going spell of cold wave. The Met office forecast mainly dry weather during the next 24 hours. However, Jaipur could be partly cloudy. Pilani was followed by Udaipur at 5 degree Celsius while in Jaipur the mercury hovered around 6 degree. Dabok and Bikaner were at 7 degree, while Jodhpur and Dholpur recorded 9 degree. The border towns of Churu and Sriganganagar recorded 6 degree. Another border city, Barmer too stayed at 8 degrees. Ajmer at eight degrees was one degree above normal and Jaisalmer was at nine. --UNI
