Indian Medicine Central Council Act to be amended

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 4. The Union Cabinet today decided to amend the Indian Medicine Central Council Act and the Homeopathy Central Council Act to allow more control by the Central Government over the functioning of the Central Council for Indian Medicines and the Central Council for Homeopathy.

In the case of the Central Council for Indian Medicines, which is responsible for practitioners of ayurveda, unani and siddha medicines, the amendments, when passed by Parliament, would empower the Government to remove the president, vice-president, and elected and nominated persons of the council if they were found to be deficient in the discharge of their duties.

The Cabinet also decided that while it would give itself more time to complete the consultative process for amending the existing guidelines for providing uplinking facilities to television channels, it would extend the deadline to March 31 for conformity by existing news and current affairs television channels to eligibility criteria laid down by it.

In addition, it approved the reconstitution of the National Commission to study the developmental aspects of the denotified tribes, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, which met today, gave its nod for the implementation of a Rs. 110-crore scheme for upgradation and strengthening of emergency facilities in government hospitals located on National Highways.
