CHENNAI, JAN. 4. Metrowater has launched measures to make safe drinking water available to the tsunami-hit areas in Chennai. Besides providing water through some 120 tanks in the affected coastal areas, Metrowater is also ensuring water supply through public fountains. Between 60 to 80 litres of drinking water per capita per day is being supplied to these areas since the tsunami, a senior official said. Street supply using tankers was stopped in these areas as the tsunami victims did not have vessels to collect water. Instead, they obtained water from tanks and public fountains in areas such as Srinivasapuram and Foreshore Estate where the daily supply was done through 40 public fountains. Tsunami-hit areas, including Ayodhyakuppam, Thideer Nagar, Nochikuppam and Doomingkuppam had also been provided with about 30 hand pumps, he said. Besides regular pipeline leak monitoring in such areas, the Quality Assurance Wing of the Metrowater also analysed water quality with the samples from the coastal areas. Groundwater in coastal areas had not been affected by the tsunami, he added. Metrowater officials said the tsunami-hit areas were also being inspected for damage to sewer lines.
