NEW DELHI, JAN. 4. An eight-year-old boy was killed and two children and a woman were injured in separate incidents of fire reported from different parts of the Capital in the past 24 hours. According to the fire service officials, a fire broke out in a house at Old Nangal in Delhi Cantonment around 1 a.m. Realising that the house was on fire, the occupants rushed out of the building leaving a boy, Ashish, behind. Ashish, who was asleep, fell unconscious apparently due to asphyxiation, while his mother, Geeta, sustained minor injuries. He was rescued after a while and taken to Deen Dyal Upadhyaya Hospital where doctors tried to revive him, but in vain. Geeta is stated to be out of danger. Nearly 250 jhuggis were gutted in a fire that broke out in Yanuma Pusta at Geeta Colony in East Delhi around 4-15 p.m. today. About 17 fire-tenders were pressed into action and the blaze was brought under control within an hour. Two children, however, sustained burn injuries in the incident. In yet another incident, a portion of a four-storey building collapsed at Sadar Bazar in North Delhi after a fire broke out in a plastic granules and thinner manufacturing unit on its first and second floors. While no one was reportedly injured, the building was partially damaged in the fire. The police have registered a case against the building owner, Mohammad Zahid, and are investigating.
