DEHRA DUN, JAN. 5. The conservator of the Shivalik Forest Circle, Jairaj, has ordered the Divisional Forest Officers and other staff to step up patrolling and conduct surprise checks to prevent poaching and other forest crimes in the area. "The alert has been sounded after some criminals removed the tusks of an elephant that died after falling down a hill in the Kotdwar area earlier this week. This indicates that criminals are active in the region and have to be caught before they cause further damage to the flora and fauna," Mr. Jairaj told The Hindu today. It may be recalled that at least seven tuskers were killed and their tusks chopped off in the forests near Rishikesh and the core area of the Corbett National Park over the past three years. Although, the forest and police officials went to far-off places including Assam, the culprits could not be traced. Large-scale theft of herbal plants and timber is a big business in the Uttaranchal hills.
