Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 5. The Pondicherry administration has distributed Rs. 1 lakh to each of the 49 families who lost their kin when the tsunami struck Pondicherry. The families were also given Rs. 5000 to meet part of the funeral expenditure. An official source said here today that 107 bodies had been washed ashore in Pondicherry. But 58 of the deceased belonged to Tamil Nadu and hence the ex-gratia payment was restricted to families of 49 persons belonging to Pondicherry. Housing subsidy of Rs. 10,000 had also been distributed to each of 601 families to carry out repairs their houses. As far as Karaikal is concerned only two of the 472 families who lost their kin had been handed ex- gratia of Rs. 1 lakh each and Rs. 5,000 for funeral expenditure. As the remaining families had no safe place to keep the money, the administration has planned to distribute Rs 1.05 lakh later. The Union Territory lost 1996 fishing vessels (mechanised boats, wooden and out board motorised catamarans among others); further, in Karaikal 4661 vessels had been damaged.
