Pondicherry
By S. Nadarajan
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 5. Even though most of the tsunami-hit villages are limping back to normal, the fear still lingers. The spectre of the December 26 killer waves still haunts the fishermen who say that they could stay at their homes or in the open close to their houses in the day but they dread to remain in their villages at night. Sudhakar, a fisherman, said the immediate requirement was houses for them at safer places and also boats and nets to resume work. A housewife said she and her children were staying in their partly damaged house during the day and would go back to relief camp in the night. A batch of 60 foreigners, attached to Auroville in the vicinity of tsunami-hit villages, is working in tandem with volunteers of the National Service Scheme and local villagers to remove debris and other materials. Jessica, a teacher from Canada, said as soon as she got information of the devastation in Pondicherry and neighbouring villages, she rushed to Pondicherry from Kerala to assist the people. The Pondicherry PCC president, V. Narayanasamy MP, along with the Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, and functionaries of the party in Kalapet block distributed rice, blankets, stainless steel plates and tumblers to displaced villagers. Mr. Narayanasamy said the relief were distributed at Ganapathichettykulam, Sinna and Periya Kalapet. The Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Sunil Dutt, distributed relief materials at Ganapathichettykulam and Periya Kalapet.
