Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 5. The Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Sunil Dutt, today said his Ministry would depute volunteers to counsel those who suffered a psychological setback in the recent tsunami attack. Addressing reporters here after visiting Ganapathichettykulam, a coastal pocket ravaged by the seismic wave, Mr. Dutt said nearly 200 volunteers could be deputed and they would counsel the children in a two-month camp. Where the counselling was needed for elders it would be given for a year. Assuring the Union Territory administration of all possible assistance, Mr. Dutt said the youth needed confidence and encouragement, although the fear would not go away quickly. He complimented the government and voluntary organisations for their efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and provide relief to villagers in Pondicherry. The Minister said he would present a detailed report to the Prime Minister on the impact of the tsunami in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Centre had already sent a Coast Guard ship for rescue work in Karaikal region. Nearly 4.95 lakhs of food packets were distributed in Pondicherry and Karaikal so far. Mr. Dutt said distribution of dhotis, saris, towels, blankets, towels and 265.6 tonnes of rice to displaced villagers through relief camps in two regions were the important features of the relief work implemented with the help of the Central Government. The Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, said the affected families were given Rs. 12,000 as immediate relief.
