PONDICHERRY, JAN. 5. A five-member Central team today visited Ganapathichettykulam in Kalapet block to assess the damage and loss of lives in the tsunami strike. The team, led by the Executive Director of the Central Social Welfare Board, Vijaya Srivastava, comprises E.E. Jose (Deputy Secretary in the Department of Rural Development), H.C. Gautam (Additional Commissioner-Crops in the Union Agriculture Ministry), B.C. Munda (Director of Planning Commission, New Delhi) and B. Chakrapani (Central Groundwater Board). The District Collector of Pondicherry, V. Candavelou, and the Member of Parliament, M. Ramadass, briefed the team on the extent of damage in villages in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. An official source said here today that the administration assessed that as much as Rs. 500 crores worth of property, farmlands and infrastructure were lost. The Pondicherry administration has launched a web site (www.pon.nic.in) to enable people to access the site for more details.
