Telugu Desam leaders consoling tsunami victims at the Andamans on Wednesday.
HYDERABAD, JAN. 5. A three-member team of the Telugu Desam Party visited the tsunami-struck Andaman and Nicobar islands on Wednesday in an attempt to console an estimated 75,000 Telugu population. The team comprising the MPs -- Yerran Naidu and Alladi Rajkumar -- and the MLA, Kala Venkata Rao, went around the islands speaking to victims and officials about relief and rehabilitation works. Of the 110 relief camps being run in the islands, 11 were in Port Blair. Complaints from victims included those of inadequate drinking water and rations, they said. In a press release, the media coordinator, D. Srisailam, said the team had found that many of those who had lost their lives in the tidal waves belonged to Srikakulam district. Those who had narrowly escaped were extremely happy to note the concern expressed by the TDP leaders who were on the islands at the instance of the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu. The TDP leaders assured the Telugu population that the shortcomings in relief and rehabilitation works brought to them would be taken to the notice of the Government and remedial measures taken. The visitors also met the Union Minister of State for Home, Jaiswal, and the Chief Secretary, Andamans, V.V. Bhatt. They conveyed their impressions and urged them to take relief measures.
