Minor quake

New Delhi Jan. 5 . An earthquake of slight intensity was felt in the early hours today near the Uttar Pradesh-Uttaranchal border, the Met Department said.

The tremor, measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale, occurred at 2.44 a.m., it said, adding its epicentre lay at 29.8 degree North latitude and 77.8 degree East longitude.

Donation for tsunami victims

NEW DELHI JAN. 5. The students, faculty members and administrative staff of Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management (LBSIM), Delhi -- one of the premier business schools in the country -- has contributed an amount of Rs.2 lakhs towards the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund in aid of the tsunami victims.

The Chairman of Board of Governors of LBSIM, Anil Shastri and the Director of the institute, R. A. Yadav, along with a group of students and staff of the business school handed over the cheque to the Minister of Human Resource Development, Arjun Singh.

In a statement, Mr. Shastri said: "LBSIM has always taken the initiative for social cause. In the past, the institute contributed for the victims of Gujarat earthquake. Today, when the nation is going through such a sad phase, the institute has once again risen to the occasion. This is only the beginning and we will continue our efforts in this direction."

Sikhs call on Sonia

NEW DELHI JAN. 5. On the occasion of "Prakash Utsav" of Guru Gobind Singh, a Sikh delegation led by the president of Indian National Forum (INF), Balbir Singh, called on the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, at her residence here today.

According to an INF release, the delegation presented a robe of honour and saropa to Ms. Gandhi. The Congress president greeted the delegation on the auspicious occasion and requested them to see to it that people belonging to Sikh and Punjabi communities contributed liberally for the welfare of tsunami victims.

Delhi Metro hailed

NEW DELHI JAN. 5. The Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Nakagawa, today had a first hand experience of the Delhi Metro when he travelled on the underground section between Kashmere Gate and Delhi University.

The Delhi Minister for Transport and Power, Haroon Yusuf, the Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), E. Sreedharan, and the Transport Commissioner, Rajeev Talwar, accompanied Mr. Nakagawa during his visit.

Congratulating the DMRC for constructing such an excellent Metro rail system that has advanced safety and technical features, Mr. Nakagawa said: "The Delhi Metro is the most modern metro in the world and is a symbol of the heart-to-heart cooperation of Japanese citizens living in India."
