DAVANGERE, JAN. 5. The Superintendent of Police, Alok Kumar, has said that accidents can be checked effectively only if drivers, vehicle owners and others are taught traffic rules. Inaugurating a Road Safety Week programme here on Tuesday, he said many people lack road sense, and this is why accident rate is not coming down. He said the police will take up a drive to paste radium stickers on tractors and bullock carts to improve their visibility. He said the road safety coordination committee has to play a key role in providing good roads. The panel is not functioning well now because many members do not turn up for meetings. Giving statistics about road accidents and fatalities, he said 197 people were killed in accidents here in 2002. The following year, it was 183, and in the previous year, 143. H.N. Shadaksharappa, veteran journalist, spoke on the occasion.
